Play by Play

A channel for thorough analysis of Shakespeare plays taken one at a time. The client approached me to create a brand for this exciting new YouTube channel which helps teach people in an accessible and digestible way about Shakespeare’s plays, one play at a time.

Research, Sketch, Concept…

In the initial phase of the project, I explored multiple different directions to take the logo. Drawing upon blackletter typography from the 16th c to paired down book of hours concept. Though, the client, and I both agreed that although the content is historical, literary, and academic the key ingredient to the branding is to make it feel accessible to users on YouTube. I drew inspo from logos using negative space which evokes a sense of boundless knowledge and the free form edges inspired by Matisse Cutouts which feel warm and friendly.

Typography

I used “Sherman” as a display font for its soft yet assertive edges and because it was drawn with boldness in mind while balancing a warm and friendly feeling. As a new YoutTube channel, credibility is important, especially if you are teaching a subject to the world. This felt like the right fit.

Branding

While exploring the color palette I drew much inspiration from physical spaces and this palette reminds me of reading while surrounded by a room full of books…perhaps with a glass of whisky next to you on an oak side table. I found it important to balance the physical world of reading with the digital world where this project lives.
